Deacon Ryan Andrew
2017-18: Theology IV
Saint Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota
My name is Ryan Andrew and my home parish is Christ the King in Des Moines. I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Des Moines at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. I first started considering the priesthood when I attended at Youth 2000 retreat at Dowling Catholic High School in January 2004. While I visited a few seminaries prior to graduating high school, I decided that I would take the route of going to college before possibly entering the seminary.
As I progressed through my college career, the question of the priesthood never completely left me. At different times I thought that I may be called to marriage, and, at other times, I felt that I may very well have been called to be a priest or religious. The idea of being a priest never really left me throughout my college years as a student.
I continued discernment following graduation from Benedictine College in the spring of 2010 (Atchison, Kansas), after which I moved back to Des Moines and started working. The idea of being a priest has been with me since I was 18 years old and has never completely left so I saw the next step in the process of discerning my vocation as being to enter seminary. I was accepted as a seminarian the summer of 2011 and in the fall of 2011, I entered St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota as a seminarian for the Diocese of Des Moines.
Since entering the seminary I have grown closer to Jesus Christ through daily individual prayer and communal prayer with my brother seminarians as well as the staff and faculty at St. Paul Seminary. My time at seminary has brought me to a deeper love of Jesus Christ and His Church. I hope to continue to allow Christ's grace to intensify my love for Him as I continue on my journey towards priesthood.
